WHAT CAUSES DRY ROT?
Dry rot can often occur within a building when unprotected or untreated timber becomes damp. Problems such as plumbing leaks, leaking roofs, defective guttering and masonry are the most common reasons that decay can start to take effect. Airborne spores latch onto timber where the moisture content is over 20%, germinating before fungi begins the digest the wood and take with it the elements that ensure your timber is strong and effective. When ignored, the fungus can thrive, leaving the wood weakened until it is destroyed entirely.
How to treat dry rot:
Our goal is to step in before the structural integrity of the timber is beyond repair, and here’s how:
-
We’ll first complete a thorough inspection to identify areas of dry rot and their cause, carried out in properties across Scotland, including Wishaw, Glasgow and Edinburgh
-
Once we have determined the source, we’ll combat moisture to eliminate to further growth of fungus
-
All infected timbers will be removed
-
The remaining timber will then be treated with a fungicide solution and damaged wood will be replaced
SOME OF THE WAYS YOU CAN IDENTIFY DRY ROT
-
Crumbly, dry and brittle wood
-
A damp smell
-
Visible spores, identified by coloured dust
-
Shrinking and warping of the timber
-
Visible sighting of the fungus at different stages, characterised by various growths on the wood including mushrooms, grey strands, and a cotton wool type substance
